Peregrine Falcon

Family Falconidae, Falco peregrinus

This is the fastest animal in the world, capable of stooping (diving in the air) at speeds over 200 miles per hour. They have the best eyesight of raptors. Many are now found in urban settings where they nest on skyscrapers and dine on a wide selection of pigeons. They are 16-20 inches tall with a wingspan 3-4 feet in length. They were endangered for many years, but reintroduction programs have successfully brought them back.

Hatched: 1985

Personality: He was one of the first birds to fly in the World Bird Sanctuary's B.A.S.H. program for Air Force Bases. He has saved many airplane pilot lives. He trained new trainers for the B.A.S.H. program. He is now a retired Air Force bird and spends his retirement as an ambassador of his species.

Sex: Male

Hatched: 6/8/92

Weight: 1 lb, 6 oz

Why is the bird here? Injured as a young bird, he cannot be released.

Personality: Screams a lot, and lies down all the time

Name: Edgar

Sex: Male

Hatched: 1999

Weight: 1-5.0

Why is the bird here? Bred at WBS for release, but after he broke his clavicle and scapula, was put into educational programs.

Personality: Very quiet, active falcon. Likes to stomp in a circle after eating.

What does this bird do in the show: Display bird.


Name: Sirrocco

Sex: Male

Hatched: 1997

Why is the bird here? Bred in captivity and used in the BASH program until he was injuried. Is now working in education and displays.

Personality: Can be very vocal at first then quiets down, very active, flaps a lot. Loves meal time.

American Kestrel

Family Falconidae, Falco sparverius

Known as the sparrowhawk, it is the smallest and most common falcon in North America. They can see in ultraviolet. They are only 10.5 inches tall, but have a 2 foot wingspan.
